Please allow me to share with you how I painted the portrait of Poet/Philosopher Alan Ginsberg: “It was painted in 1971, shortly after starting my first teaching job. A small private school hired me to teach art for only two and a half days a week, affording me the time I needed to develop my portrait style. Alan Ginberg - my subject - was a mentor to Bob Dylan, whose music was just bursting forth on the scene. My friends and I were crazy about Dylan and his thought provoking lyrics. This philosophic portrait is just as much a homage to Dylan as it is to Mr. Ginsberg. I would have loved to have heard them perform at Gerdes Folk Club in Greenwich Village, but I was young, and broke and had to content myself with listening via my record albums.”
Looking at the portrait now brings me back to my student days at the Beaux Arts, when groups of my artist friends, and myself drank pungently strong java, in the coffee houses of that time frame, late 60s into early 70s, pondered those Questions without Answers..we ruminated, we argued, we pontificated, but we constantly searched...and in that quest we grew as people and as artists as well. We devoured the lyrics of the day, Bob Dylan,Ferlinghetti,Kerouc, and of course Ginsberg .
None of us ever thought that we were either born into, or had discovered the truth behind the truth of the universe..no matter what kinds of rituals we or our parents practised..these Questions remained unanswered..but not for our serious efforts in trying to unleash the Meaning of life.. Eighteen year old deep thinkers, we took ourselves VERY seriously!!
I abandoned any form of traditional belief then, my paintings became the doorway to creation, the vehicle I used to pursue my investigations.. Are there parallel universes out there, does the universe connect us with just the right people at just the correct moment in time, can we at anytimes of our lives, find corollary paths, and keep seeking those answers?

Carole Spandau was recently interviewed in Metro newspaper
Carole Spandau was recently interviewed in the Metro newspaper about the ever-changing face of Montreal.
Carole Spandau, is an artist who specializes in urban scenes of Montreal.
Is Montreal is a beautiful subject to paint?
Absolutely. I started painting portraits. Then I wanted to represent the "face" of Montreal. Montreal is a beautiful city. Forget the potholes. Those who live here do not always realize how lucky they are. If people raised their eyes a little and looked at the buildings ...
What fascinates you about Montreal?
Convenience stores! This is typically Montreal. I like to paint Park Avenue, with the Rialto. The architecture is incredible. The Plateau is my playground. I challenge you to name another city where there are exterior stairs on three floors. They are everywhere in the Plateau. All our neighborhoods, for examlpe, Saint-Henri, have retained their respective character. We tend to take it for granted. The joy of life is important in Montreal. My winter scenes are very colorful, and I like to use warm colors. I also love to paint Old Montreal in the summer.
Is there a place you would not want to paint?
As an artist, I always try to make an area more beautiful than it really is. I notice the details. I could pass by a building without noticing it, but if I took a closer look, I would always find something beautiful and intriguing about it. But I never would paint a mall. The condos are not easy to paint either. This is a bigger challenge. These are large squares. I always add a little human presence such as flowers, dogs or bicycles.
